Kean Wong: And a tricky trial has now begun in The Netherlands over the murder and torture of thousands of Croats during the Bosnian war. Croatia wants reparations and closure more than anything. Lets take a look. Croatia has brought its case before the International Court of Justice in The Hague. It's seeking reparations from Serbia and Montenegro who it alleges were responsible for state-sponsored ethnic-cleansing during the Bosnian War. In its opening arguments, Serbia said the court had no jurisdiction because the country was not a member of the United Nations at the time the suit was filed in 1999. It also denied that genocide had taken place. [Tibor Varady, Lawyer for Serbia]: "There were indeed Croatian sufferings and that most of these were caused by misdeeds of Serbs. Crimes were undoubtedly committed. Croatian sufferings have dignity and deserve respect. But it does not mean that they have to be qualified as genocide." The Bosnian War began in 1992 as the Yugoslav Federation began to fall apart. Slovenia and Croatia were the first to break away, then Bosnia also declared independence. Unlike other former Yugoslav states which generally had a dominant ethnic group, Bosnia was an ethnic tangle of Muslims, Serbs and Croats - and this mix led to a fierce fight for independence. At least 100000 people were killed during the conflict which ended in 1995. Now Croatia believes it's time Serbia and Montenegro were held responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Croats. Raphael Lemkin born on June 24, 1900 was a Polish lawyer of Jewish descent. Before World War II, Lemkin studied the Armenian Genocide in depth and campaigned in the League of Nations to ban what he called "barbarity" and "vandalism". He is best known for his work against genocide, a word he coined in 1943 from the root words genos (Greek for family, tribe or race) and -cide (Latin for killing). He first used the word in print in Axis Rule in Occupied Europe: Laws of Occupation - Analysis of Government - Proposals for Redress (1944). Pancho Haralanov Vladigerov (or Wladigeroff, or Vladiguerov, or Vladigueroff; Bulgarian: Панчо Хараланов Владигеров) (13 March 1899 8 September 1978) was a Bulgarian composer, pedagogue, and pianist. Vladigerov is arguably the most influential Bulgarian composer of all time. He was one of the first to successfully combine idioms of Bulgarian folk music and the West European art music tradition. Part of the so-called second generation of Bulgarian composers, he was among the founding members of the Bulgarian Contemporary Music Society (1933), which later became the Union of Bulgarian Composers. Vladigerov marked the beginning of a number of genres in Bulgarian music, including the violin sonata and the piano trio. He was also a very respected pedagogue; his students include practically all notable Bulgarian composers of the next generation, as well as the pianist Alexis Weissenberg. Vladigerov was born in Zürich, Switzerland, but lived in Shumen. His mother Dr. Eliza Pasternak was a Russian Jew and a relative of the famous writer Boris Pasternak. His father Dr. Haralan Vladigerov was a Bulgarian lawyer. Pancho Vladigerov played the piano and composed since early age. In 1910, two years after his father's early death, Vladigerov and the rest of his family moved to Sofia where Pancho started studying composition with Dobri Hristov, the most distinguished Bulgarian composer of his generation. About former lover nest of Friderik II Celjski and his young fiancée Veronika Deseniška, today testify only wreckage of castle on one of summits over the town of Kočevje - Fridrihštajn. The story starts long ago in a year 1420, when Friderik became owner of Kočevska region. Between years 1422 and 1425 he on the steep summit on mighty rock built the castle and name it by himself. There was only one way to enter the castle through the main castle doors all other sites are protected by high steep rock walls. The entrance behind the castle walls was through the drawbridge over artificially made ditch. On the summit castle was surrounded with strong defensively walls. Friderik equipped beautifully also interior of the castle. Rooms were full of valuable carpets, crystal, artificial weapon and tools from silver and gold. Estates from surrounding settlements must work on the castle and area around. The main road to the castle was permanently maintained. Count Herman II Celjski the father of Friderik did not want Friderik to marry with Veronika Deseniška from political reasons. He sent strong solider squad to castle Fridrihštajn with orders to separate the lovers. Friderik tried to escape but did not succeed. They caught him with a trick and took to the city Celje. When Friderik was saved, count Herman sent another army squad to grab Veronika. They searched through the castle and whole region but could not find her. She disappeared without a sign.
